Introduction

Education at Stanford University Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine is rich, vibrant, diverse and available for faculty fellows, residents and others with an interest in learning.

The Department offers a 12-month ACGME accredited fellowship training program in pediatric anesthesia, which provides a comprehensive clinical experience in pediatric anesthesia allowing the trainee to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to become a perioperative consultant in pediatric anesthesia. Clinical experiences include all subspecialties of pediatric anesthesia, pain management, regional anesthesia, critical care, and a variety of other educational electives. Qualified trainees may apply for a second-year training, with opportunities for advanced clinical experience in pediatric cardiac anesthesia, pediatric pain management, research or quality, safety and performance improvement. For information on advanced training, please contact:

Facility

Opened in 1991, the Packard Children’s Hospital currently houses 361 beds and 6 centers of excellence:

The institution has a level IV Neonatal ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, and Pediatric ICU and is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

Simulation in a variety of forms is built into the fellow’s curriculum, but is also available for faculty to experience, participate in and teach. There are workshops and seminars that are hosted by the Stanford Medical School, Hospital, University, and division that are open to faculty to staff. Innovation in education is highly valued by the Department of Anesthesia and several Teaching Scholars Projects are subsidized each year.  Examples of Teaching Scholar output include an online anesthesia resident education portal and a pediatric difficult airway application.
